Investigators Recover $30M in Stolen Crypto From Axie Infinity Hack
Wow, very cool. Axie Infinity’s Ronin network exploit ranks as one of the largest DeFi hacks of all time, but investigators 🔎 are making progress in paring down the damage: Bockchain analytics firm Chainalysis today announced that more than $30 million worth of the stolen crypto has been recovered.
Chainalysis revealed the news at the official AxieCon event in Barcelona, alongside publication of a blog post about its findings. According to the firm, Chainalysis was able to track the funds 💰 —which the U.S. Treasury alleged were stolen by North Korea’s Lazarus hacker group—as they were laundered and eventually sent to centralized exchanges.
Web3 Investor Animoca Brands Raises Another $110M for Open Metaverse
Animoca, a leading investment firm and NFT game publisher, just added to its coffers via some fresh institutional investors. Animoca Brands, a leading investor in NFT and metaverse-centric startups, today announced that it has raised an additional $110 💰 million in funding in a round led by new institutional investors Temasek, Boyu Capital, and GGV Capital. The firm invests in Web3 startups focused on an open, interoperable metaverse, and also publishes its own NFT games. Quite a large-scale amount.
Coinbase Backs Tornado Cash Lawsuit Against U.S. Treasury
The support group got expanded? A group of Tornado Cash users filed a lawsuit ⚖️ against the U.S. Department of Treasury, calling its sanctioning of the Ethereum mixing service an "unprecedented, overbroad action."
The suit, which is being funded by Coinbase and includes several employees as plaintiffs, also names Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) Andrea Gacki. 🗯 "Code is speech and free speech is a constitutional right worth protecting," one of the plaintiffs said.
The Sandbox's Instagram account compromised, hackers try to rent BAYC NFTs
Hackers don't sleep. Metaverse platform The Sandbox saw its Instagram profile hacked and used to try and rent out Bored Ape Yacht Club nonfungible tokens (NFTs) from a number of users on the social media platform. The voxel-powered NFT platform’s profile was compromised by hackers 🕵️♂️ on Thursday, promoting a fabricated raffle ticket event that touted a season 4 LAND giveaway to unsuspecting users. One user claims to have lost NFTs after clicking the fake link.
Sony Music files trademark application for NFT-authenticated music
Another giant in the NFT collection waters. American music giant Sony Music 🎼 Entertainment has signaled intentions to utilize nonfungible tokens (NFTs) after filing a trademark application covering music and artists under the Columbia Records logo. The new trademark application comes in the wake of several other Sony Music-backed NFT projects.
According to an Aug. 30 trademark application to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) shared by trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis on Tuesday, the application covers 💬 “audio and video recordings featuring live musical performances authenticated by NFTs.” The application also covers marketing services, promotion, distribution, marketing, advertising and online entertainment, including podcasts and audiovisual recordings.
UK economic secretary commits to make country a crypto hub under new PM
A promising start. In a parliamentary debate on crypto asset regulation in the U.K, Richard Fuller spoke in favor of “powerful” use cases for cryptocurrency and blockchain technology, including using distributed ledger technology 💱 for customs and international trade and storing medical records on the blockchain. Alexander Stafford, the parliamentary private secretary to newly elected PM Liz Truss, added the prime minister “reaffirmed” her commitment to providing internet connectivity for U.K. residents, which could allow access to buying, selling, and mining crypto.
‘She Will’ Director Launches NFT in Support of End Violence Against Women
Artist and filmmaker Charlotte Colbert is launching a 1-of-1 NFT based on her horror film “She Will,” with the proceeds of the sale going to support 🤝 the charity End Violence Against Women. The NFT, titled "Why are we taught to fear the witches?" depicts the film’s star Alice Krige in a short video that draws on the film's folk-horror aesthetic.
Colbert’s NFT is launching as part of Goddess, an NFT show by online gallery Eye of the Huntress in collaboration with NFT marketplace SuperRare. The show aims to address the gender imbalance ❌ in the digital art space; according to a November 2021 report by ArtTactic, women made up just 16% of primary and secondary sales on the NFT marketplace Nifty Gateway over the preceding 21 months.
Conclusion: As soon as the market changes course and direction, the news changes too. As we can see, much of the news appeared about the integration of NFTs, the development of meta universes, and other favorable events. Who knows. Maybe this is another trap to create a dump? One thing is certain, September promises to be very interesting!
