Treasury Fines Crypto Exchange Bittrex $53 Million for Sanctions Violations
Breaking all records. The U.S. government has hit digital asset exchange 💱 Bittrex with fines of $53 million—the biggest fine on a crypto business by the Treasury Department to date.
The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) said Tuesday that the U.S. exchange would have to pay two fines to the government entities of over $24 💰 million and $29 million, respectively, for “apparent violations” of multiple U.S. sanctions programs. This is because the exchange allegedly allowed people from the Crimea region of Ukraine, Cuba, Iran, Sudan, and Syria to make crypto transactions of over $263 million between March 2014 and December 2017, the statement said.
SEC Rejects WisdomTree Bitcoin Spot ETF Application
Oops, not their day. “The Commission concludes that BZX has not met its burden under the Exchange Act and the Commission’s Rules of Practice,” 📃 read the filing. Specifically, the SEC ruled that the exchange hasn’t demonstrated that its WisdomTree Bitcoin Trust would be “designed to prevent fraudulent and manipulative acts and practices” while protecting investors and public interest.

OpenSea Adds Avalanche NFT Support
The largest NFT marketplace now offers art on seven blockchains, including the “smol” world of Avalanche. OpenSea has added NFTs from the Avalanche blockchain to its online marketplace, the company 🤝 announced. The marketplace—which saw roughly $350 million in Ethereum NFT volume traded last month—now supports NFTs from seven different blockchains: Ethereum, Polygon, Klaytn, Solana, Optimism, Arbitrum, and now Avalanche. Very impressive perspectives.
CNN to shut down its NFT marketplace and issue 20% refund
Hmm, what was the reason? United States-based multimedia outlet CNN announced in a tweet that it would shut down its nonfungible token (NFT) project less than four months after its launch. Dubbed “Vault by CNN: Moments That Changed Us, 📲 ” the collection included a series of tokenized iconic news moments from CNN’s 41-year history, along with a vault to purchase, store and display the NFTs.
In explaining the decision, CNN said Vault was a “6-week experiment” and a “first foray into Web3.” However, the firm will 💬 “no longer be developing or maintaining this community.” The collection was originally minted on the Flow blockchain, with CNN “retain[ing] copyright and ownership over the content.”
Economists debunk the banking system and win the Nobel Prize
Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvig conducted research on the economic role played by banks during times of financial crisis. According to the Nobel 🥇 Prize Organization, this research included an important finding on why it is not only important but “vital” to avoid the collapse of banks. Tore Ellingsen, the chair of the committee for the prize in economic sciences, said: “The laureates’ insights have improved our ability to avoid both serious crises and expensive bailouts.” Congratulations.
SEC Investigating Bored Ape Creator Yuga Labs Over Securities Violations
Some very bad news. The United States Securities and Exchange 💱 Commission is investigating Yuga Labs over whether its Bored Ape Yacht Club Ethereum NFTs and the ApeCoin token are unregistered securities.
The report, which cites an unnamed source, claims that the agency is exploring whether the crypto startup broke federal law by issuing NFTs that act like stocks, as well as 🔍 exploring the distribution of the Ethereum-based ApeCoin token that launched earlier this year. Yuga Labs has not yet been accused of any wrongdoing and the investigation may not necessarily lead to charges, per the report.
Conclusion: It's quite significant that Google is beginning to accept crypto payments. And the current Bitcoin support levels are very strong. The whole thing is reminiscent of a spring season.
See you tomorrow, folks! Thanks for being with us :) Brought to you by Maksym, Svyat, and Aleksandar :)
